Navigating Prague: A Guide to Using Public Transport
3 NOV 2023
Prague, with its rich history and enchanting architecture, attracts visitors to explore its wonders. One of the best ways to navigate this beautiful city is through its efficient and well-connected public transport system. In this guide, we'll walk you through the ins and outs of using public transportation in Prague, making your exploration of the Czech capital as convenient as possible.
Understanding the Transport Network
Prague integrated public transportation system includes trams, buses, and the metro (underground lines). The city is divided into fare zones, and a single ticket is valid for various modes of transport within a specified time frame.
Prague's public transport is wheelchair-friendly, with accessible trams, buses, and metro stations. Information about accessibility is available on the official transport website ( www.dpp.cz/en ). Detailed timetables can be found on the following page.
Types of Tickets
Single Ticket
Ideal for short journeys.
Valid for a set duration (usually 30 or 90 minutes) and can be used on trams, buses, and the metro.
Validate the ticket upon boarding.
Day Pass
Unlimited travel on all modes of public transport for 24 hours.
Perfect for a full day of sightseeing.
Multi-Day Pass
Offers flexibility with 3-day, 7-day, and longer options.
Cost-effective for an extended stay.
You can buy tickets in vending machines that can be found at the metro stations, tram stops, and some bus stops as well. These machines accept coins, banknotes and the new type also contactless forms of payment. These are newly installed also inside the trams and buses.
I recommend also to download or follow the mobile app of the Prague´s public transport company for real-time schedules and ticket purchase.
Navigating the Metro
Prague's metro system consists of three lines (A, B, and C). Each line is color-coded, making it easy to follow. Metro stations are well-signed in both Czech and English, and trains run frequently.

Trams and Buses
Trams are an iconic part of Prague´s public transport. The tram network is extensive and covers the city completely. Trams operate from early morning until midnight. Night trams run at night, with individual lines always running at least twice an hour.
Buses complement the tram and metro system and they are essential for reaching areas that are not served by the other modes.
Historic Tram Line No. 42
The historic tram line No 42 is in operation all year round, connecting important tourist destinations in Prague. The route of the line is mainly through the historic centre and operates on a hop-on, hop-off basis. The line is always in operation only on Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays. The PID tariff (i.e., not even Lítačka) does not apply on this special line. Check the DPP page for details.
The line operates from approximately 10:00 am to 6:00 pm.
Interval: 40 min.
Journey time: 41 min.
